How much exactly is the wristwatch's mineral glass scratch resistant?
Because I have this watch http://www.casio.com/products/archive/Ti... aaaaaand though it's with a regular mineral glass i've hit it real hard in some surfaces like 6 times aaaaand no scratch at all?How is that possible? I usually know that MINERAL glass is not scratch resistant?!?! OR IS IT?!?! Because Now I bought a new watch aaand and it again with mineral glass so I am kind of upset because i didn't take one with a sapphire glass which is scratch resistant...but ma question is however if the mineral glass is scratch resistant and to a what degree?
From what I recall, mineral glass is essentially glass that has been reinforced by the introduction of other harder minerals within it. If you observe standard glass under a microscope, it is actually full of 'holes' which make the glass a lot more susceptible to surface damage. The minerals introduced not only fill in these 'holes' but also act as a intermediary agent that hold the clumps of glass molecules together so what you get is a smoother surface which is less likely to be scratched. As a result, they are much tougher than standard glass, and are almost as scratch-resistant as the much more expensive sapphire glass variants.
Sapphire glass is essentially a sapphire crystal, whose molecules are much better arranged as compared to any glass, thus making them far superior in terms of scratch-resistance.
From experience however, my phone (Nokia 8800), has a mineral glass face and that has shown some scratches after some moderate usage. My watch (a Tag Heuer), with a sapphire glass face, is almost flawless despite it being exposed to a lot more than my phone has ever been subjected to, along with the fact that I've had the watch many years longer than my phone.
If you would ask me to give you my views, I'd say that a steel needle point driven with considerable force onto a mineral glass surface would probably scratch or chip it but to scratch a sapphire crystal, the use of some dispensable diamonds would probably do the trick.
