Round Top
Round Top

Why did general chamberlain have to hold little round top?
what was the reason for general chamberlain to hold little round top
Actually, it was Colonel Chamberlain. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain didn't become a Brigadier General until after the Battle of Gettysburg (he was brevetted to Major General but never recieved an actual promotion to Major General). And the reason the regiments had to hold Little Round Top was that they had been placed on the Army of the Potomac's left flank. With the 20th Maine being on the far left, that is the last in line. Lee wanted the Round Tops so as to put artillery up on them and be able to bombard the rear of the Federal lines. Which meant he had to flank Meade's left flank. Had Chamberlain and the 20th Maine not held, Lee would have successfully done exactly that.
