Can a carpet/sheet laid on the upper surface of the glass roof solve the problem of noise during the rain?
I was thinking of laying a carpet/sheet on the top of the roof so when it pours down it will hit the carpet instead of the glass, hence the noise is reduced. Anyone thinks it will work?
It might work, but you are going to run into problems, probably fairly quickly, the first being the weight of the carpet when it gets wet. I am not sure if it would be too heavy to stay on top of your glass, or if it might break through. The second thing that I can see being a problem would be mold growing in the carpet as soon as it gets wet. Since it is outside, it might not bother you, but the wet carpet on top of the skylight might make a good breeding ground for mold. Then there might be water damage around the skylight, if you leave the carpet up there. Not sure if it might be easier to put a sound damper where the sky light comes into the house. Carpet on the walls of the skylight "tunnel" (where the light comes through the ceiling) is one idea. The second idea would be to get some fabric (I'm thinking roman shades) that are somehow mounted in the skylight tunnel. Not sure how I would mount them, but the home improvement superstores (e.g. Home Depot) might have someone that could offer suggestions.
